hands, threads, thoughts
Bobbin lace making is a handcraft that is based on a systematic alternation of twisting, crossing, knotting and intertwining threads. Different strands of threads (knowledges) can be linked together in multiple ways. In order to explore aesthetic thinking through bobbin lace making, my working definition of aesthetic thinking is ‘thinking through making’/ ‘making through thinking’. I work with three approaches to bobbin lace making as aesthetic thinking. First, I experiment with the handcraft bobbin lace making itself. Second, I transfer of the concept of bobbin lace making on my writing practice. Third, I explore how bobbin lace making can inform existing research methods. I experiment with artistic research methods of the peer discussion/review. In this component I focus on the third. This component deals with the following question: How can we implement our artistic practice in our peer activities radically? In this component I give a very short idea of experimental bobbin lace making and my (nodal) writing practice. I show examples how I experimented with exploring a format of artistic research peer discussion that focuses on its implementation in practice instead of 'talking about'. Further, you will find three exercises that instruct how an artistic research peer review of other components could be implemented in practice. The exercises are proposals for one of multiple possible ways of referencing. They are completely negotiable and serve as a kind of proposal for an instruction of producing a thesis that triggers a discussion.

Exercise Nr 1 Imagine we are gathering here because the academic community exhausted all that can be said and done to define artistic research. We are forced to enter a new state of after artistic research: We don’t talk ABOUT it anymore, we focus on the doing. We implement artistic research practice radically. Exercise Nr 3 Think of a movement connected to your practice.Imagine yourself performing this movement. What does it feel like?Imagine every one else in this room performing your movement. What do you notice?

TimingFungi magic: The magic of fungi manifests in myriad ways. When you go looking for mushrooms, you enter a world of wanderlust, with a focus of finding something. This leads to a hypnotic yet fully awake state. Time stretches, senses sharpen. The further into the forest you go, the more immersed you are in this state. Some mushrooms are masters of timing. They wait for a long time, deep in the soil, to push out to the surface very fast, when the circumstances are just so. [1] Exercise Nr 8 Perform the movement connected to your practice. But before you make it,wait for the breathing to change, wait for your companion’s reaction, wait for your pinky toe feeling weird,,wait for some thing, wait for a second thought, wait until you are ready. Then, perform your fungi magic gesture.---[1] cf.
