For these reasons, ancient philosophers considered that a careful examination of what is truly desirable in life - and what is not - is of the utmost importance. As Plato thought, human beings do not really know what they want, for the normal human condition (statistically speaking) is characterised by ignorance of what is truly desirable. Trying to overcome this ignorance is the origin of an explicit philosophising about well-being, good living, and the good life.
